This lesson shows you how the Rook moves.

It moves forwards, backwards and sideways as many squares as it likes.

Up and down, left and right.

A Rook can be BLOCKED by a friendly piece.

Here, the Rook CANNOT move onto or beyond the square occupied by the White Pawn.

A Rook can CAPTURE an enemy piece by moving onto its square.

In this position the White Rook can CAPTURE the Black Pawn.

To make a capture you take the enemy piece off the board and replace your piece on that square.

It's NOT the same as checkers (draughts) - you DO NOT capture by jumping over an enemy piece.

Watch the movie and see how the White Rook captures the Black Pawns.
