This lesson shows you how the King moves.

It moves just one square at a time, in any direction.

Up, down, left, right or diagonally.

The King can capture an enemy piece on the next square.

Here, the White King can capture the Black Pawn.

There is one other special rule about the King.

It cannot STAY ON or MOVE TO a square where it can be captured by an enemy piece.

Here, the King CANNOT move to a square where it can be captured by the Black Rook.

In this position the King cannot move to a square where it could be captured by the Black Bishop.

And here the White King cannot move next to the Black King.

Note that TWO KINGS CAN NEVER STAND NEXT TO EACH OTHER!

In this position the White King can only move to one square.

On every other square it could be taken by one of the Black pieces.
