This lesson shows you how the Bishop moves.

It moves diagonally as many squares as it likes.

See how the Bishop always stays on the same colour square.

If you find you've got two Bishops on the same colour square you've made a mistake!

A Bishop can be BLOCKED by a friendly piece.

Here, the Bishop CANNOT move onto or beyond the square occupied by the White Pawn.

A Bishop can CAPTURE an enemy piece by moving onto its square.

In this position the White Bishop can CAPTURE the Black Pawn.

To make a capture you take the enemy piece off the board and replace your piece on that square.

It's NOT the same as checkers (draughts) - you DO NOT capture by jumping over an enemy piece.

Watch the movie and see how the White Bishop captures the Black Pawns.
